The PDJF 5K Run Raises Money to Support Permanently Disabled Jockeys

The PDJF 5K run hosted by Arlington International Racecourse (Arlington Heights, IL), is a charitable event—now in its 4th year—that raises money for the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund (PDJF). The event is open and welcome to all runners, walkers and strollers in an effort to fund the PDJF in their efforts to help support jockeys who have become permanently disabled.

The PDJF is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial assistance to some 60 former jockeys that have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Since its founding in 2006, the fund has disbursed over $5 million to permanently-disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries. Many of the beneficiaries were injured while in their 20s and 30s and face decades of living with a disability. They have lost income and the opportunity to build a financial base sufficient enough to support them and their families.

The medical needs of disabled jockeys are great and may include daily assistance from a caregiver. In today's healthcare environment, costs continue to escalate—posing even greater challenges to individuals who courageously test their limits every day.

All proceeds from registrations and supporting donations for the PDJF 5K Run go directly to the PDJF. Prizes are awarded for both the male and female top-three finishers: Win, Place and Show. Every participant receives a FREE PDJF 5K t-shirt, and FREE general admission passes for a future day of fun at Arlington International Racecourse.

Please follow the PDJF on Facebook @jockeysfund and on Twitter @PDJFund to get updates on the PDJF public charity. For updates on the PDJF 5K run at Arlington International Racecourse, follow on Facebook @PDJF5K.

About the PDJF
:

The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial assistance to some 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Since its founding in 2006, the fund has disbursed over $5 million to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have sustained paralysis or brain injuries.

Many of the jockeys we serve were injured while in their 20s and 30s and face decades of living with a disability. They have lost their income and the opportunity to build a financial cushion sufficient to support them and their families.

The medical needs of our disabled jockeys are great and may include daily assistance from a caregiver. In today's healthcare environment, costs continue to escalate -- posing still more challenges to individuals who courageously test their limits every day.

The PDJF strives to reach out to everyone in the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse industry, their business partners and the great fans of this sport for their support.  Our long-term goal is to create an endowment that will enable the fund to be self-sufficient.   While we build that endowment we ask for your support so that we may continue to assist these permanently disabled jockeys with their day-to-day needs.
